Lithophanes were conceived in 1827 in Europe, when it was discovered that a remarkable three dimensional image could be produced by shining light through a carving of various thicknesses in porcelain. These beautiful transparencies were achieved by first carving the image into soft beeswax, lit from behind. The translucency of the wax allowed the artist to see the results of his work as he worked. A plaster casting was taken from the original masterwork, then a fine porcelain paste was pressed into the mold. After drying, the porcelain plaques were then fired to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit to achieve their extreme density and amazing translucency.

This beautiful curved porcelain light light, titled "Fairy Mother Child", is based on an art print by fantasy artist David Delamare. The lithophane panel measures 4 1/2 inches tall, 3 1/2 inches wide, and fits nicely into the curved slot on the night light. It can be used in any North American power outlet. The lithophane comes with a box explaining the history of lithophanes, as well as installation and care instructions.
